New Rumors Make Detroit Pistons Trading Jalen Duren This Week a Move That’s Best For Business

A pair of rumors make it seem like the Detroit Pistons trading Jalen Duren this week would be a move that is now best for business.

The Pistons-Duren relationship has slowly deteriorated throughout the summer. He entered the offseason as a restricted free agent seeking a max contract from Detroit or another interested team. However, the Pistons have blocked all sign-and-trade discussions in the hopes of forcing the big man to sign their offer. As talks have dragged out, the club reportedly increased its recent offer to $200 million . Yet it still isn't enough for Duren.

Duren earned All-Star and All-NBA honors for the first time after a breakout season in 2025-26. He should have all the leverage in contract talks because he is a 22-year-old star big man on the rise. However, he doesn't because of an awful showing in the 2026 playoffs that cost the Pistons a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in close to 20 years. It has emboldened Detroit to take a harder stance in negotiations.

Yet, the center and his representatives aren't budging, and it is becoming realistic he will accept the team's $9.6 million qualifying offer so he can return to free agency next summer. This means the Pistons need to consider trading him instead of losing him for nothing in a year. But how likely is it that the All-Star leaves two hundred million on the table to spite Detroit? Well, it seems very likely.

"Per league sources, the Sacramento Kings and Milwaukee Bucks are known to be among the teams with serious interest in Duren. Both teams have veteran big men with strong resumes who could potentially fill the hole left by Duren in a deal, but the Pistons have refused to engage in talks on that front for months now," The Athletic reports.

"Per league sources, Duren believes he could land a maximum-salary deal next summer and eventually make up the money lost next season over the course of the next five years."

Nevertheless, the Pistons center would be taking a huge risk by not accepting the team's offer. He could either suffer a serious injury or not have quite as good a season in 2026-27 as he did last year. Yet, Duren taking the smaller qualifying offer is not that outlandish because another top free agent this summer seriously considered it.

According to Marc Stein, "league sources say that Walker Kessler 's camp successfully convinced Utah Jazz officials that he was absolutely determined to go the qualifying offer route this summer had he stayed in Utah and then proceeded to free agency next summer."

That threat compelled the Jazz to make a sign-and-trade with the Los Angeles Lakers that landed them two unprotected first-round picks and two first-round pick swaps.

If two young bigs with the chance to get huge pay increases are willing to take lower offers for a year so they can leave their current teams and go somewhere that will offer the money they want, the Pistons should stop playing with fire and consider trading Duren this week. Or risk having a disgruntled player on the roster all season who is looking to get numbers for a return to free agency next year.
