Eagles Make Jonathan Greenard Decision as Howie Roseman Reveals Expectations for His Return

The Philadelphia Eagles have made an encouraging decision regarding Jonathan Greenard ahead of their Week 1 matchup with the Washington Commanders . Philadelphia did not place the veteran edge rusher on the physically unable to perform list to begin the regular season. Among other things, the decision suggests a green light about Greenard's recovery from a pec strain.

Greenard was placed on the PUP list before training camp and has not practiced with the Eagles this summer. Consequently, many initially raised questions about whether he would be available for the start of the regular season. However, general manager Howie Roseman offered a more encouraging outlook while discussing the decision to keep Greenard on the active roster.

Eagles Expect Greenard Back Sooner Rather Than Later

Roseman stopped short of p roviding a specific return date, but his comments suggested the Eagles believe Greenard will not be sidelined for an extended period. NFL insider John Clark shared Roseman's explainer on the situation via his X account.

"Us not having him on PUP and missing time here shows that we anticipate him playing sooner rather than later. What that timetable is, again, we'll keep close to the vest. The guy's a tremendous football player. He's got a tremendous ability to affect the quarterback. He's going to come back in tremendous shape. I think that you saw the D-Line's obviously a position of emphasis for us always. The guy fits what we do. Yeah, there'll be some things that will be a little bit different and we'll get him up to speed, but we expect him to have a high impact on this team this season for all accounts of what he's done and how he works and how he leads, he's as advertised. We're excited to have him."

The Eagles' decision to keep Greenard on the 53-man roster means they expect him to contribute relatively soon. However, Philadelphia has not confirmed whether that means Week 1 against Washington.

The team is taking a cautious approach with the injury. Greenard's absence throughout training camp means he will need time to regain his football conditioning before returning to game action.

Considering that the Eagles made a significant investment in Greenard this offseason, there's little surprise about the rationale for maintaining their big-money acquisition. Philadelphia acquired Greenard and Minnesota's 2026 seventh-round pick in exchange for a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 third-rounder.

The Eagles signed Greenard to a four-year, $100 million extension that includes $50 million fully guaranteed, underlining the organization's belief in his ability to impact the defense. Yet, there's no denying that Greenard has already demonstrated his immense ability during his NFL career.

The former Florida standout entered the league as a third-round pick by the Houston Texans in 2020. After showing steady development, he broke out with 12.5 sacks in 15 games during the 2023 season. He then joined the Vikings in free agency and produced 12 sacks during his first season in Minnesota. Greenard also forced four fumbles during his 2024 Pro Bowl season.

His 2025 campaign was interrupted by a season-ending injury after 12 games as he finished that season with 38 tackles and three sacks. But by the middle of 2025, Greenard had already built a career history that reinforced the Eagles' confidence in their investment despite his current absence.
