Sophie Cunningham recently explained her approach to money, and the way her family's background shaped her attitudes towards building wealth.

As her popularity continues to grow, Sophie Cunningham is likely finding more financial opportunities than ever before. Her estimated $3 million net worth could grow exponentially in the coming years.

The Indiana Fever star has been a role player at the WNBA level for most of her career. However, as of September 2026, she can claim to have one of the biggest fanbases in sports.

In a recent interview she did with the Indiana Fever's social media teams at her family's farm, Cunningham spoke candidly about her family's financial past, and her own ideas for building wealth.

Sophie Cunningham says her family had 'some really good times and really low times' financially

Cunningham is the daughter of two former student athletes. Her father Jim, played football at the University of Missouri, while her mother Paula, was a javelin thrower.

Her father worked as a building contractor, a business which was significantly impacted by the 2008 housing market crash. Cunningham opened up about it in the interview.

"Our family was in the house market when it crashed in 2008 and that was really hard on our family," Cunningham said. "We've had some really good times. We've had some very, very low times.

"I think sometimes when you see both sides of it, sometimes you can be really risky with your money. Sometimes you need to be a little more conservative with your money."

Sophie spoke about how being involved with the farm is really grounding however, and how it helps her chill when it comes to various financial pressures.

Sophie Cunningham says people should 'learn along the way' while taking help from others when it comes to finances

Like many other star athletes, Cunningham now has financial advisors who help her grow her wealth. She explained how much she trusts them and how important that is.

However, the Fever star's advice went beyond that. She encouraged people to learn about how everything works and how they can get involved, too.

"Yes, you have people that are working for you, that are handling your money. But also, learn along the way," the 30-year-old said.

"You can find anything. You can go to the library and find books on it. You can get on social media and there are people to help you there. Finding someone that you feel good about it is the most important thing.

"Everyone is going to be different. I think that's the beautiful thing. It's not one thing to be successful with your money. There's always going to be people who have been where you're at that can help you."

This is excellent advice from the WNBA star. Even regular people, not just athletes, can learn from it. As she continues to build her own wealth, it is clear that Cunningham has a plan for her future.
