Manchester City 2 (Mateo Kovacic 40′, Vitor Reis 72′)

Brighton 2 (Malick Yaicouyé 30′, Georginio Rutter 47′)

Here are the Manchester City player ratings as the club have progressed to the fifth round of the Carabao Cup after beating Brighton 4-3 on penalties at the Etihad Stadium tonight. The match finished 2-2 after 90 minutes. Both teams attacked throughout the game in what turned out to be a pulsating Carabao Cup tie.

Brighton took the lead twice as Malick Yaicouyé opened the scoring in the 31st minute. Mateo Kovacic equalised for Enzo Maresca's side in the 40th minute with a composed finish. Georginio Rutter restored Brighton's lead in the 47th minute before Vitor Reis cleverly turned in a Rayan Cherki free kick to make it 2-2 in the 72nd minute. Both teams pushed for a winner but the game ended 2-2 after 90 minutes.

A penalty shootout would decide the fourth round Carabao Cup tie. After Mateo Kovacic saw his spot kick saved by Brighton keeper Jason Steele, it seemed like Fabian Hurzeler's side had the advantage in the shootout. However, Gerónimo Rulli saved Yasin Ayari's spot kick before Rayan Cherki calmly gave Manchester a 4-2 lead. Rulli would then deny Brighton captain Lewis Dunk to seal Manchester City's progression to the fifth round of the Carabao Cup.

Manchester City's defence of the trophy they won last season marches on after an enthralling cup tie at the Etihad Stadium tonight. My City player ratings can be seen below.

Enzo Maresca took the opportunity to rotate his squad tonight. Maresca's selections

Gerónimo Rulli- 8.5/10: An extremely impressive display in goal from Rulli. He made one exceptional save and was City's hero in the penalty shootout.

Rico Lewis- 6/10: Lewis got on the ball often but his lack of defensive awareness did cost his team tonight. He must improve that side of his game.

Vitor Reis- 8/10: Reis was composed at the back throughout the match. Whether that was in possession or defensively. He grabbed his first City goal and he must start playing more often.

Marc Guehi- 6.5/10: A couple of nervy moments at the back from Guehi but he was better than previous games.

Nico O'Reilly- 6/10: He looks short of a gallop and will be better after getting minutes into his legs.

Ayyoub Bouaddi- 7.5/10: For the 45 minutes he was on the pitch he was superb. His composure in the face of Brighton's press was a sight to behold.

Mateo Kovacic- 7.5/10: The Croatian midfielder grabbed a goal and was good in midfield throughout the game I thought.

Phil Foden- 8/10: Some quality touched throughout the night from Foden and he was a constant attacking threat.

Rayan Cherki- 8.5/10: Cherki grabbed an assist and he was brilliant overall in an open match that suited him.

Allan- 6.5/10: I'd like to see him get on the ball more often but he does work tirelessly.

Floyd Samba- 6/10: He played a role in Kovacic's goal but was on the periphery of the match, however he showed touches of class at times.

Rayan Ait-Nouri- 7/10: Ait-Nouri offered plenty on both sides of the ball as he put in a performance he needed for his own confidence.

Ryan McAidoo- 6/10: He toiled away without influencing proceedings.

Jeremy Doku- 7.5/10: It did seem late on that Doku would be Manchester City's match-winner as he gave the Brighton defence fits.

Abdukodir Khusanov- 6/10: He came on late and was lively on both sides of the ball.

Enzo Fernandez- 6/10: Brought on late for the penalty shootout and did his job when he expertly converted his spot kick.
