The Indianapolis Colts received a major boost ahead of Week 1 as three important offensive playmakers returned to practice. Wide receivers Josh Downs and Alec Pierce , alongside tight end Tyler Warren , were all on the field Thursday.
Downs is dealing with a minor calf issue, while Pierce is recovering from a left ankle and heel injury. Warren has been working back from a groin problem. Their return comes at an important time for Indianapolis, with the regular-season opener against the Baltimore Ravens approaching.
Pierce's Return Gives Colts Offense A Lift
Pierce's presence could be particularly valuable after his breakout 2025 campaign. The receiver recorded 47 receptions for 1,003 yards and six touchdowns. He also led the NFL in yards per reception for the second consecutive season, averaging 21.3 yards per catch.
Indianapolis rewarded that production with a four-year, $114 million contract extension in March. However, the Colts were forced to wait several months before seeing their investment back on the practice field. Pierce eventually underwent ankle surgery after a PRP injection failed to resolve the issue. As things stand, his return should now allow the Colts to gradually increase his workload before Week 1. The Athletic's James Boyd shared the injury updates via X.
Following such a lengthy absence, the Colts have carefully managed Pierce's recovery. He initially participated only in individual drills after returning. The ambitious receiver has already identified Week 1 as his target.
However, the Colts will need to determine how quickly he can transition into full-team work. That process will also involve rebuilding his timing with quarterback Daniel Jones and the rest of the franchise's quarterbacks.
Beyond Pierce's return, Downs provides a reliable option for Jones, while Warren's availability could strengthen an offense that expects significant contributions from the tight end. Warren's presence is especially important because Indianapolis selected him with a major role in mind. Getting all three players back simultaneously gives the offense more of the personnel it expects to use during the regular season.
The Colts also have Jonathan Taylor and newly signed Keenan Allen available to form a deeper collection of offensive weapons. Then, there's Jones, who is another key piece of the equation. The quarterback is preparing to return from an Achilles injury suffered last December. That makes the health of his supporting cast even more important as Indianapolis works toward the opener.
The Colts have limited time to get everyone ready without exposing them to unnecessary risk. Pierce, Downs, and Warren will therefore l ikely remain under close observation during the final stages of preparation.
For Pierce, simply getting back onto the practice field represents a significant milestone after months of rehabilitation. For the Colts, having three key playmakers return together could provide exactly the boost their offense needs heading into the regular season. If all three can continue progressing without setbacks, Indianapolis could enter Week 1 with a much more complete offensive unit than it appeared likely to have earlier in the offseason.
