The Atlanta Hawks were a sneaky squad last season, catching fire in late February and becoming the only team to hold a series lead over the eventual NBA champion New York Knicks during the 2026 playoffs, but their spring surge does not necessarily forecast sustained success. A more robust Eastern Conference forces this franchise to prove itself once again , and the same is true for Jalen Johnson .
The All-NBA Third-Team selection will determine Atlanta's ceiling. He needs to be the consistent "top guy" the Hawks otherwise lack, and through seven games of the 2026-27 season, Johnson has struggled to maintain that form. The 24-year-old forward will have to do more than merely find his shot in Monday's matchup against the Indiana Pacers . He must also push through an ankle issue.
Johnson highlights the list of Hawks players who popped up on the latest injury report. Will he suit up in Gainbridge Fieldhouse?

Status of Jalen Johnson for Hawks-Pacers
The No. 20 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft is questionable with a left ankle sprain . Despite averaging an impactful nine rebounds and eight assists per contest, Johnson is shooting only 42.1 percent from the field and 25.8 percent from 3-point range. Breaking out of such a funk is much harder to do when battling a lower-body injury.
Atlanta (3-4) is already down rookie point guard Kingston Flemings, who was suspended one game for intentionally elbowing Bryce McGowens in the head during Saturday's 121-99 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans. Center Jock Landale is also sidelined with a left hip strain, so the Hawks could use a Jalen Johnson explosion on Monday night.
The Pacers (2-5) are seemingly the right opponent for Atlanta. They are still without keystone Tyrese Haliburton (hamstring), and trusted big man Ivica Zubac is nursing his own ankle sprain, giving the Hawks a prime opportunity to bounce back on the road.
Still, fans would feel much better if No. 1 was in action. Johnson will tend to his ankle and try to get himself ready for a 7:30 pm (ET) opening tipoff.
