49ers signing veteran defender to help fill glaring need

The San Francisco 49ers have taken some hits to their defensive line room early this season, with Mykel Williams on PUP and Alfred Collins out for the season on injured reserve.

With that in mind, the 49ers are bringing a veteran into the room, as NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported that they're signing Naquan Jones off the Minnesota Vikings practice squad.

Jones, 28, played at Michigan State from 2016-20. He went undrafted in 2021 and has had professional stints with the Tennessee Titans , Arizona Cardinals , Miami Dolphins , Los Angeles Chargers and Houston Texans .

In 60 professional games, he's recorded 102 tackles, 10 quarterback hits, 6.5 sacks and five passes defensed.

Jones should be a welcome addition to a rotation that will also include Osa Odighizuew, C.J. West and Gracen Halton. James Thompson Jr. is also in the room, but he suffered an injury on Sunday against the Dolphins.
