Bruce Prichard is set to leave his position next spring, with a WWE Hall of Famer reportedly in line to replace him.

Earlier this week, the news broke that Prichard requires neck surgery linked to an injury he sustained in 1991. According to Mike Johnson of PWInsider , he is expected to retire from his full-time role as Executive Director - Creative Writing & Talent after WrestleMania 43.

This is a huge development as Prichard has been with World Wrestling Entertainment for over 25 years. Most notably, he acted as a writer, producer, and Vince McMahon's right-hand man before his release in 2008. The 63-year-old rejoined the creative team as an executive in 2019.

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported that he would remain with the company as a consultant, but he would work from home when the time comes. WWE is reportedly grooming Shawn Michaels to take on his role.

Given his connection to Triple H, this makes perfect sense. More to the point, HBK has been a writer and producer for NXT and a driving force behind the latest crop of young wrestlers.

This would be a major change, but it could be the move WWE needs to reshape the company in 2027.

A Much-Needed Change of the Guard for WWE

Obviously, this is interesting because Prichard is one of the last links to the McMahon regime. The former chairman and CEO still has a lasting imprint on WWE, but we're getting closer to a creative team built entirely by Triple H.

That's uncharted territory for the globally recognized purveyor of sports entertainment. However, the company desperately needs some new voices and fresh ideas. Promoting Michaels may not be the most drastic internal shift, but it's a step in the right direction.

Similarly, NXT could use a new approach, and AJ Styles has already surfaced as a potential replacement. The developmental brand has undeniably produced a wave of budding stars, but the weekly product has been lackluster.

Nevertheless, HBK excels as a coach, and his evident relationships with the wrestlers would make him an exciting addition to the current creative team. He may not have Prichard's years of experience, but he's the right man to usher in the next generation of Superstars.

WWE has already improved the pipeline from NXT, but this also ensures this era's call-ups will be handled with even more care. While Triple H is the public face, Michaels is more accessible and hands-on with the talent. The possibility of the two working closely together on the main roster is an intriguing move for the company's future.

Conversely, there are certainly some concerns about promoting someone so closely linked to Triple H and the McMahon family. It would be ideal to introduce someone entirely new, with an untainted vision for the product.

With all things considered, that was a highly unlikely outcome. WWE will promote someone trusted to steer the ship without changing too much of its time-tested formula.

That would make Michaels a strong candidate, and the benefits outweigh the drawbacks of his ascension. He has earned his peers' and the new talent's esteem and demonstrated an immense respect for the business.

Most fans will also approve of his promotion because they already know him as a legendary performer and promising off-screen presence. It may be a safe pick, but that doesn't mean it's not the right one for this regime. This seemed inevitable, but there's plenty of reasons to be excited about it.
