Minnetonka eighth-grader is drawing comparisons to Minnesota football legends

Theodore Brown might be the next big thing in Minnesota high school sports.
Brown became the first eighth-grader to play varsity football at Minnetonka High School earlier this year, and he's already developed into one of the Skippers' top receivers. His breakout moment came in a thrilling comeback win over Blaine, when he caught two touchdown passes to help Minnetonka advance to the Class 6A state tournament quarterfinals.
Justin Conzemius, a former Gophers defensive back whose son also played at Minnetonka and Minnesota, believes Brown has the potential to become the greatest wide receiver in Minnesota high school history.
"I was there. Watched this kid all year. Potential to be greatest WR in Minnesota high school history," Conzemius posted on X , mentioning Brown alongside Larry Fitzgerald, Eric Decker and Tyler Johnson.
"Amazing body control, hands and football IQ. 8th grade!" Conzemius added.
Putting an eighth-grader in the same conversation as Fitzgerald (Holy Angels), Decker (ROCORI) and Johnson (Minneapolis North) is a bold statement. Fitzgerald, a first-ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer, finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting as a sophomore at Pittsburgh in 2003. Decker and Johnson went on to become two of the most decorated receivers in Gophers history.
Brown certainly gave Minnetonka fans a glimpse of his potential against Blaine, hauling in eight passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns.
The Skippers trailed 21-0 late in the third quarter before mounting a furious comeback. Quarterback Cade Gutzmer connected with Brown for a 37-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 21-14, then found him again for a 60-yard score with 3:41 remaining to make it 21-20.
Minnetonka completed the comeback with the go-ahead touchdown with just 23 seconds remaining.
Eighth-graders emerging as varsity stars is rare, but Minnesota has seen its share of young phenoms.
Brothers Tyus and Tre Jones made their varsity basketball debuts at Apple Valley High School as eighth-graders, Tyus in 2009-10 and Tre in 2013-14. Paige Bueckers was also an eighth-grader when she debuted for Hopkins High School in 2015-16.
Maddyn Greenway, the daughter of former Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway, began playing varsity basketball at Providence Academy as a seventh-grader. She went on to become a McDonald's All-American and is now in her freshman season at Kentucky.
There's even another eighth-grade football phenom making waves in Minnesota.
Carter Cupito, now a freshman at Blake School, became the starting quarterback at SMB as an eighth-grader. SMB is a co-op program featuring St. Paul Academy, Minnehaha Academy, Blake School and Hope Academy.
The son of former Gophers quarterback Bryan Cupito has already received a scholarship offer from Minnesota, and he'll be back on the field Nov. 12 when SMB faces top-ranked Orono in the Class 4A state tournament quarterfinals.
And while Cupito continues his remarkable freshman season, Brown has an opportunity to add another chapter to his own story when Minnetonka takes the field in the Class 6A state tournament quarterfinals.
It's far too early to know whether Brown will eventually belong in the same conversation as Fitzgerald, Decker and Johnson, but the fact that he's already drawing those comparisons as an eighth-grader speaks volumes about his potential.
