Marquez could benefit at any moment after Martin takes MotoGP injury gamble

MotoGP championship leader Jorge Martin has received a stark warning over his decision to opt against surgery.

The Aprilia rider took the lead back from Marc Marquez in Austria, a week on from arm pump taking him out of the battle in Misano.

Ahead of his impressive sprint victory and second place in the Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring, Martin said he would decide on surgery the Monday after the weekend concluded.

However, with such a strong showing, he then admitted he didn't feel it was necessary, and that rest was the best option for his ailment.

Yet his vastly experienced agent, Carlo Pernat, has suggested the call could backfire at any moment.

Pernat has worked with a number of the sport's greats, and is more than familiar with how arm pump can strike at any moment.

Martin warned arm pump could occur without warning

Speaking to MotoSan, he said: "Martin has decided against surgery, and he probably made the right choice because the championship is very important to him.

"But he should be careful, because this compartment syndrome can strike suddenly, almost without warning, and the arm can become unusable.

"Regarding his choice, I would say that 50% of the decision is correct and 50% is incorrect. We'll see. I hope it was the right one…"

Martin may have missed key window for operation

Arm pump is an issue almost every rider has experienced and is the colloquial term for chronic exertional compartment syndrome.

The issue is common in all forms of motorcycle racing and is alleviated by an insertion into the arm and removal of fascia.

Martin may have missed a key window for surgery , with a two-week break between Austria and Japan, followed by Indonesia a week later.

For Pernat, he now has only two title rivals, Marquez and Aprilia teammate Marco Bezzecchi.

He added: "This World Championship is being fought between three riders: Marquez, Martin, and Bezzecchi.

"It's a shame for Ai Ogura, who crashed a couple of times before his injury, but he showed what he's made of. And it's also a shame for Pedro [Acosta] , who crashed in the sprint when he could have accumulated another 12 points and closed the gap even further.

"Perhaps the World Championship wouldn't really have been decided, but it would have made everything even more interesting. It's truly a great world championship."
