Eagles hold on for Week 1 win over Commanders | How it happened

PHILADELPHIA — The Eagles won their season opener with a 24-22 victory over the Washington Commanders Sunday.

Dallas Goedert was Jalen Hurts ' big-play threat with two receiving touchdowns. Hurts finished 14-for-25 for 203 yards and three TDs.

Goedert's second score – a 43-yard TD reception with 6:02 to play put the Eagles up 24-16. Washington threatened with a 1-yard TD connection from Jayden Daniels to Antonio Williams .

The Commanders' two-point conversion attempt that would have tied the game was snuffed out by Moro Ojomo and the Eagles' defense to preserve the win.

The Eagles held on by the skin of their teeth. A touchdown pass from Jayden Daniels to rookie Antonio Williams gave the Commanders a chance to tie the game with a two-point conversion.

But Eagles defensive tackle Moro Ojomo snuffed out the shovel pass on the two-point try. The Eagles recovered the ensuing onside kick, and Jalen Hurts kneeled out the win.

Jalen Hurts continues to save the Eagles' offensive line. Facing a third-and-18, Hurts was under pressure yet again, but scrambled for a 22-yard gain to move the chains.

Three plays later, Hurts found Goedert, who rumbled for a 43-yard touchdown. Massive sequence.

The Eagles are hanging on by a thread. Jayden Daniels' 10-yard touchdown pass to Stefon Diggs cut the Eagles' lead. But thanks to Diggs committing a dumb penalty, jumping on the goalpost in celebration and pushing the Commanders back 15 yards, Washington couldn't really go for two and try to tie the game. Instead, they settle for a long PAT.

The Eagles' offense continues to sputter with offensive line issues abound. But they were able to string together a seven-play, 43-yard drive that ended in a 35-yard field goal by Jake Elliott , his first FG of the season. That blocked PAT by Jalen Carter earlier in the game is looming large.

The Eagles' offense isn't doing itself any favors, going three-and-out twice to start the second half. But the defense is picking up the slack, and Drew Stevens missed a long field goal to allow the Eagles to keep their narrow lead.

The Commanders cut into the Eagles' lead with a goal-line plunge by Jacory Croskey-Merritt , capping a 12-play, 67-yard scoring drive. Drew Stevens' PAT was blocked, though, by Jalen Carter.

Dontayvion Wicks shows up again. After a 64-yard catch in the first quarter, Wicks secured his first touchdown with the Eagles, scoring from inside the red zone on a nasty route.

Saquon Barkley gets the assist on the touchdown after a 42-yard burst through Washington's defense. Barkley had only four rushes of 20-plus yards in 2025 after ripping off 17 runs of 20-plus in 2024. Expect to see more of that.

Epps, who left the game with a shoulder injury and was listed as questionable to return, has come back in. Good news for the Eagles' secondary.

The first touchdown of the season goes to Dallas Goedert. The veteran tight end snared a 17-yard touchdown pass, perfectly fit in by Jalen Hurts between a couple of defenders.

It all started with a 64-yard bomb from Hurts to Dontayvion Wicks. Great route, great ball. What a way to secure your first catch in an Eagles uniform. Wicks built chemistry with Hurts this summer — and they're capitalizing on it.

Injury update: Marcus Epps, questionable (shoulder)

Eagles starting safety Marcus Epps is listed as questionable after going to the locker room with a shoulder injury. The veteran earned the starting job next to Drew Mukuba in training camp. But for now, the Eagles will have to rely on Michael Carter II to step into the role.

Mannion's first two drives as the play-caller? One first down and two punts. The Eagles are using more motions and movement pre-snap. That's a positive, in theory. But Mannion's scheme hasn't yielded results thus far.

Washington strikes first with a 55-yard field goal by Drew Stevens. The Eagles, after winning the coin toss and deferring to the second half, allowed the Commanders to start things off. Solid run stuffing by Nolan Smith and Jordan Davis highlighted the defensive series for Philly.
