Eagles cornerback Riq Woolen dominates coverage in Week 1 victory
Riq Woolen saw four targets but allowed no catches or yards over 37 coverage snaps in his first start for the Philadelphia Eagles
Riq Woolen could not have provided a much stronger introduction to fans in the City of Brotherly Love during his first regular-season start with the Philadelphia Eagles . According to Ryan Fowler of NBC Sports Philadelphia , Woolen was targeted four times during Philadelphia's 24-22 victory over the Washington Commanders . He did not allow a reception or a receiving yard across 37 coverage snaps.
Washington tested other areas of Philadelphia's secondary throughout the game, but Jayden Daniels found little success when directing the football toward Woolen. The Commanders quarterback completed 18 of 34 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns. The performance illustrated why Philadelphia identified Woolen as an unquestioned starter after signing him to a one-year contract during the offseason.
At 6-foot-4, Woolen gives defensive coordinator Vic Fangio a rare combination of size, length, and recovery speed at outside cornerback. His physical traits let him disrupt receivers at the line of scrimmage while still able to recover when opponents test him vertically.
Philadelphia's secondary produced some uneven moments elsewhere. Cooper DeJean allowed a fourth-quarter touchdown to Stefon Diggs from the slot, while Washington moved within two points during the final minute.
Woolen remained steady throughout those difficulties. His coverage helped force Daniels to hold the football, move through his progressions, or target more favorable matchups on the opposite side.
One performance does not answer every question about Woolen's fit in Fangio's defense, but his debut represented an ideal beginning. If Woolen can consistently eliminate one side of the field, Philadelphia will have greater freedom to disguise coverages and direct safety help elsewhere.
