Nets star predicts 50-win season in Brooklyn

Michael Porter Jr . has a habit of saying things that make people raise their eyebrows. The latest episode of his podcast, " Curious Mike ," features an interview with an adult film actress, but that's not what has people doing a double-take this week. During a recent conversation with streamer N3on, he laid out the case for the Brooklyn Nets to win 50 games this season.

That would be two-and-a-half times the number of games they won last season. It would be more than they won in the previous two seasons combined. It is a truly outrageous thought.

Porter explained the key is his chemistry with Julius Randle .

"I think if we get that chemistry right, all of our young guys from last year got so much better bro. We're like … I don't know what the expectations are for our team, but we're gonna definitely surpass that."

Porter wasn't the one to come up with that number, but when N3on asked if the Nets would pass the 50-win mark, he said yes. This would be wild. Brooklyn hasn't won 50 games in more than two decades. They went 52-30 in the 2001-02 season when Jason Kidd was the point guard and they made the NBA Finals. That's how good a 50-win team is. A team that wins 50 or more games is in the title conversation.

Only seven teams in the whole league won 50 or more games last season. The Knicks , who won the title, went 53-29.

Sniffing .500 would be an incredible achievement for the Nets this year. It would have them in the conversation to be a play-in team. They haven't made the playoffs or finished over .500 since Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving left.

It would also be one of the biggest single-season turnarounds in NBA history. Just getting to 50 would be the seventh-largest single-season turnaround in NBA history. It would put them right behind the Celtics during Larry Bird's rookie season in 1979 and ahead of the Milwaukee Bucks when they drafted Lew Alcindor, who later changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, in 1969.

Don't ever say Michael Porter Jr. isn't an optimist.
