Tonight, your 1-5 Washington State Cougars travel down to Corvallis to square off with the 4-2 Oregon State Beavers.
Both teams are rolling in off complete opposite ends of the momentum scale. For WSU, they are losers of three straight and have netted just three offensive touchdowns in those losses. Their lone win came nearly a month ago against FCS Duquesne. The Cougars are also 0-2 to start Pac-12 play with losses to Fresno State and most recently last week at Utah State.
With the offense coming in as one of the worst in football, head coach Kirby Moore has elected to make a change at quarterback. Redshirt freshman Owen Eshelman will be the starter for the Cougars tonight, making his first career start and his second appearance. He briefly appeared late in the win over Duquesne but didn't appear in the stat sheet, as he handed the ball to Leo Pulalasi twice before the game ended. Eshelman will look to spark an offense that put up a bleak 64 yards of total offense in the second half against Utah State.
As for the Beavers, it's been a rosy start for new head coach Jamarcus Shepherd. After dropping their first two games in close fashion to ranked teams in Houston and Texas Tech, the Beavers have won four in a row—including two against Pac-12 foes—and have averaged 51.8 points in those games. Last week, the Beavers trounced San Diego State, 66-14. At halftime in that game, the Beavers were already ahead 38-7. Quarterback Brady Atkinson finished the game with 409 passing yards and five touchdowns. But the real story of the Beaver offense is phenom wide receiver Jesse Legree, who had 10 catches for 191 yards and a trio of touchdowns. Legree nearly had as many receiving yards as WSU had total offense last week. So far this season, Legree has 38 receptions for a nation leading 932 yards and 12 touchdowns.
The Cougars and Beavers will also apparently be playing for a trophy for what is believed to be the first time in this long rivalry.
