No. 1 Ferris State football overcomes early deficit to beat No. 1 GVSU
Another epic Anchor Bone Classic is in the books. It lived up to the hype.
ALLENDALE - Top-ranked Ferris State trailed early but quickly turned things around against No. 13 Grand Valley State.
The Bulldogs snagged an interception and a fumble in the second quarter to erase a 17-point deficit and propel them to a 41-34 win over the Lakers in the Anchor Bone Classic on Saturday, Oct. 17, at Lubbers Stadium in Allendale.
Wyatt Bower scored on a 3-yard run early in the second quarter. Zak Ahearn scored on a 10-yard run before Jay Cady kicked a 25-yard field goal. FSU put in its other kicker, Eoin O'Sullivan, who nailed a 46-yard field goal putting the Bulldogs up 20-17 at halftime.
Bower started the third quarter with a 16-yard touchdown run, then threw a 32-yard scoring strike to Tae Boyd to make it 34-17.
The Lakers, who held a 17-0 early lead, didn't score again until 54 seconds remaining in the third quarter when Andrew Schuster threw his third touchdown pass of the game, a 61-yard strike to Kellen Reed.
But a field goal and a Schuster TD pass to Kellen Russell-Dixon pulled the Lakers within 41-34 with 4:17 to go.
