Newcastle’s January Focus Is Targeting A Centre Back & Right Winger

Newcastle United have already begun looking beyond the opening months of the season, with the club reportedly identifying two key positions to target when the January transfer window opens.

A young centre-back and a right-sided forward are understood to have emerged as priorities for the Magpies as sporting director Ross Wilson, head coach Matthias Jaissle and the club's recruitment department continue to shape the next phase of Newcastle's squad rebuild.

The reported recruitment priorities come after a summer of significant change at St James' Park. Newcastle adopted a noticeably younger recruitment strategy, bringing in players with development potential as the club looks to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level over the longer term.

That philosophy is expected to continue into 2027, although there is currently no indication that Newcastle are guaranteed to complete deals in both positions during January.

Defensive recruitment appears to be particularly important given the age profile of some of Newcastle's current options.

Fabian Schär and Dan Burn are both experienced members of the squad, while younger defenders including Sven Botman and Malick Thiaw provide Newcastle with longer-term options. The club's reported interest in another young centre-back would therefore allow Newcastle to begin planning for the future rather than waiting until an immediate need develops.

Schär and Burn have also been identified in reports as players whose long-term futures will need consideration, making succession planning increasingly relevant.

Newcastle have already demonstrated their willingness to invest heavily in young talent, and the recruitment of another centre-back would fit that broader strategy.

The other position reportedly under consideration is a right-sided attacker.

Jacob Murphy remains an important option in the position, while Anthony Elanga can also operate from the right after arriving during Newcastle's summer rebuild. However, with Murphy approaching the latter stages of his current contract, recruitment officials are understood to be considering a younger long-term option.

One name already linked with Newcastle is Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo . Reports have suggested that Newcastle are monitoring the Mozambique international, although no formal offer or advanced negotiations have been reported. Sporting are understood to value Catamo at around €60 million through his release clause.

Whether Catamo ultimately becomes a serious target remains to be seen, with Newcastle expected to continue assessing a number of potential options before deciding where to invest.

The recruitment strategy is also likely to reflect Jaissle's footballing philosophy.

The German head coach has spoken about having a clear idea of his squad while also wanting to assess his players before making further decisions. Newcastle's summer business already reflected an emphasis on youth and potential, with players such as Bazoumana Touré and Sean Steur joining the club.

The latest reports suggest that the same approach will continue.

Rather than simply looking for short-term solutions, Newcastle appear to be planning several windows ahead, with recruitment meetings already being used to identify positions and potential targets for 2027 and beyond.
