Notre Dame announced Monday that Fighting Irish legend Skylar Diggins will work as a special advisor to head coach Niele Ivey.

Ivey said the seven-time WNBA All-Star "will help elevate our program through her leadership, expertise and unique perspective as both a former student-athlete and accomplished professional":

"Skylar's loyalty and commitment to the University have been unmatched. Her ability to motivate, elevate, and inspire our student-athletes will strengthen our culture, enhance our team, and create meaningful opportunities for growth and development.

"Her impact will extend far beyond the game, helping shape the next generation of student-athletes and continuing to build a legacy of excellence within our program. Welcome home, Skylar!"

Diggins had a decorated career during her four-year run in South Bend. She averaged 15.7 points and 5.0 assists in 150 appearances. She was a first-team All-American in 2011-12 and 2012-13, and she left as Notre Dame's all-time leading scorer (2,357 points). Arike Ogunbowale and Hannah Hidalgo have since surpassed her.

Diggins was also a driving force behind the Fighting Irish finishing as national runners-up in the 2011 and 2012 NCAA tournaments. They reached the Final Four again in her senior year.

Between that and the success she has enjoyed in the WNBA, the 36-year-old guard is a great representative for Notre Dame basketball.

This is part of a larger trend as schools are using distinguished alumni to help attract talent in a recruiting landscape made more competitive by NIL and the transfer portal.

For Diggins, this might be a way to get some formal experience if she hopes to transition to coaching once her WNBA career concludes.
