Victor Wembanyama has proven that he is one of the league's best players over the past three years. However, he has already dealt with some serious health problems, but they were not the lower-body injuries that people thought he would get in the NBA.
The biggest health scare that Wembanyama has faced was the blood clots he dealt with in early 2025. It was such a big part of Wemby's life that he made sure to learn a lot of lessons from that scary experience that prematurely ended his 2024-25 campaign with the San Antonio Spurs .
Victor Wembanyama reveals the lessons he learned from his blood clot issues
Wembanyama has always dealt with problems head-on, which is why he is such a good player. However, the deep vein thrombosis or blood clots were a problem that he struggled against, especially since, if it was worse, it was life-threatening. Thankfully, Wembanyama listened to the medical professionals, so that led to him having a much better life.
It has also changed his outlook on his personal life and career. That is a big deal for Wembanyama because it felt like he grew up during that debacle with the blood clots. That helped him mature and be more expressive, which is why that was a big part of the Spurs ' run to the NBA Finals last season.
Now, Wembanyama is a much more emotional person because he knows that he does not have to hide anything after going through what he went through. Wemby is much more vocal with his team, and his team understands that he is more expressive now.
"The condition I had in early 2025, the thrombosis, had a huge impact on this. After that it's like, life's so short, I don't even want to waste it being somebody else. Simple as that," Wembanyama said on 60 Minutes about how his blood clots changed how he looked at life .
While it may seem like that is only affected his personal life, it has certainly affected his game as well. He is much more expressive with his game, and his emotions drive him to perform much better, as seen in the series against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals.
As long as Wemby continues to improve his game and regulation his emotions better, he will continue to be a star player. He is ready to take the next step, and that is to the best human and athlete he can be moving forward.
