Not many properties on the Southern California coast have seen their asking prices change as much as Rancho Cariñoso. The extraordinary 4.2-acre oceanfront ranch estate along Padaro Lane in Santa Barbara County’s seaside city of Carpinteria was first listed in 2021 for $100 million, Mansion Global reported. A year later, in 2022, the price rose to $109 million. The asking price subsequently fell to $70 million in September 2024 before dropping further to $48.975 million. Now, four years after it first came on the market, the ranch has gone to auction, with bidding starting at $20 million.Ranch land on the bluffsThe estate has nearly one acre of private beach. The property also has a horse trail that runs from the grounds straight to the sand. The land is zoned for nine horses. Loon Point, a surf break that draws experienced surfers, lies nearby. The ranch also has a single-storey house, which was built in 2014. It has three bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms and 2,514 square feet of living space. There is a fireplace in the living room, along with large windows overlooking the outdoors. In 1978, the family bought the original property, which covered nearly 28 acres, for $1 million, according to the New York Post. Concierge Auctions ran the sale online. In 2024, Ellen DeGeneres sold her neighbouring oceanfront property for $96 million. Actor Kevin Costner also owns an estate on the same bluffs. Celebrities such as George Lucas, Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher and Kourtney Kardashian also have homes nearby in the Padaro Lane and Montecito areas.
