Ocasio-Cortez on Trump Jr. wedding: ‘They’re selling out every single person in this country’

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said Monday that the Trump administration is “selling out” every American when discussing a Russian oligarch’s involvement in Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding.

The lawmaker was asked what she made of Trump Jr.’s wedding in May being partially funded by Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev, who is linked to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“I mean, as we’ve seen, these guys are in the pocket of everyone but the American people. It’s profoundly disturbing,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “I said it two years ago, and I’m saying it again. This administration … they are selling out every single person in this country for a buck, and it’s disgusting.”

“And for what? To have a couple of extra frills at your wedding? It’s disgusting,” she added.

A ProPublica report published Monday alleged that Kremlev helped to pay for wedding expenses in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, citing records and three sources with knowledge of the event. Kremlev reportedly helped rent an island and put up the money for a fireworks show at the wedding.

Model and influencer Bettina Trump, Trump Jr.’s wife, defended Kremlev’s involvement in the wedding, writing on social media , “Our dear friend Umar very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding.”

“It was an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend, and something for which we were and remain incredibly grateful,” she continued.

The two married in West Palm Beach, Fla., according to Palm Beach County marriage records. The newlyweds then went to a private island in the Bahamas for a larger wedding celebration.

Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), the ranking member on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, has called for answers regarding Kremlev’s gifts.

“Why did a Russian oligarch close to Putin fund Trump Jr.’s wedding in the Bahamas? Umar Kremlev spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the President’s son. What did he get in return? We need answers,” Garcia wrote on the social platform X .
