Trump attacks New York Magazine for calling 9/11 remarks ‘weird lie’

President Trump lashed out at New York Magazine for its coverage of his remarks on Tuesday, after he said two firefighters picked him up off the ground near the U.S. Steel Building in New York City in the aftermath of the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

“The Failing New York Magazine wrote a story that I wasn’t down at the World Trade Center after the Tragedy of September 11th, because nobody saw me there,” Trump wrote late Tuesday in a lengthy post on Truth Social. “Well, I don’t think I would be the first thing on anyone’s mind but, I was there, obviously not on the same day as the collapse, but shortly thereafter, with a large group of Construction Workers.”

The president attached a clip of him speaking to reporters by Ground Zero after the attacks nearly 25 years ago.

“Everything I said was exactly accurate and, to prove the point, I am attaching clips of me there with numerous of my people, including my then Head of Security, Matthew Calamari, who has confirmed that very sad trip to Lower Manhattan, many times, to many different Journalists, but it’s a story that just won’t die,” he added in the post.

Trump’s comments come after the publication referred to his speech on Tuesday recalling his experience in the aftermath of the attacks as a “weird lie.” He made the comments during a Steel Across America event at the White House Ellipse, commemorating the attacks and honoring the victims .

During the remarks, the president noted he was “down there right after this happened,” but later clarified he was not at Ground Zero “on the same day as the collapse, but shortly thereafter.”

“Everything I said was exactly accurate,” he said.

Trump also attacked New York Times White House correspondent Maggie Haberman, criticizing her reporting that he wanted to speak at the memorial ceremony in New York on Friday, but could not because politicians are not permitted to deliver remarks at the event.

The president noted that he would not violate the ceremony’s rules.

“I have been to the New York solemn ceremony numerous times, and nobody speaks. It is a stated fact that, ‘Politicians and public officials are not permitted to deliver speeches or remarks at the official September 11 anniversary remembrance ceremony at the World Trade Center site in New York,’” he said.

Trump is instead slated to give remarks at the Pentagon Friday to mark the 25th anniversary of the tragic event.
