New York Times gaming engineer gunned down by in-laws in Califorinia, police say

DUBLIN, Calif. ( KRON ) — A man is dead and his mother-in-law and father-in-law are behind bars after a daylight shooting in a California parking lot across from a police station.

The shooting occurred about 3 p.m. on Saturday in the parking lot of the Dublin Sports Grounds. A police officer reported that he was driving by the park when he spotted Jonathan McKinsey, a 40-year-old Dublin resident, on the ground. Reports of the shooting to 911 began around the same time.

McKinsey was reported to be suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The Dublin PD arrested two suspects in connection with the shooting. They were identified as Shili Chen and Shouyang Zhang — McKinsey’s 76-year-old in-laws.

The shooting has left the community in shock.

“It’s just surprising here in Dublin, it’s a quiet community,” said Joshua Boothby, who works at the park.

On Monday, The New York Times confirmed to Nexstar’s KRON that McKinsey was head of engineering for games at the outlet and had been at the paper since January 2023.

The two suspects were arrested within minutes with the help of witnesses, police said.

Chen and Zhang were booked into Santa Rita Jail on first-degree murder charges. Jail records for the two also include charges of child abuse or endangerment. They are currently being held without bail and scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday morning.

No motive in the shooting has yet been announced. Court documents obtained by KRON, however, indicate that McKinsey and his wife, Candice Jang, had each filed separate reports of domestic violence against one another.
