Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Hamill to join pro-immigration ‘American Tail’ live reading

A slew of stars — including “Star Wars” actor Mark Hamill, Jesse Eisenberg, “The West Wing” actor Dulé Hill and Bernadette Peters — are bringing a classic animated film to life in a show of support for immigrant communities.

The entertainers will perform a live reading of the 1986 film “An American Tail,” at a Sept. 10 virtual benefit hosted by the Workers Circle.

The Jewish social justice organization said the star-studded reading is part of its “ongoing efforts to defend this country’s immigrant communities during President Trump’s second term and to build a more just and inclusive democracy.”

“An American Tail” follows the story of a 19th century mouse named Fievel, as the pip squeak-sized protagonist immigrates from the Russian Empire with his Jewish family in the hopes of a brighter future in the United States.

The movie was chosen, the Workers Circle said in a statement, because at “a moment when immigrant communities across the country face increased threats of detention, deportation and family separation, the hopes and struggles at the heart of ‘An American Tail’ remain deeply relevant.”

Richard Kind, “West Side Story” actor Josh Andrés Rivera, “The Devil Wears Prada 2” star Tracie Thoms and actor Malky Goldman are also poised to participate in the benefit. Tickets for the non-profit’s fundraiser range from $18 to $72.

According to data released last month by the Deportation Data Project, Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained almost 50,000 people in July. The number marks the highest monthly arrest total during the president’s second term.
