Watch live: House unveils McCarthy’s official Speaker portrait

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is hosting a ceremony at the Capitol Tuesday afternoon to unveil the official portrait of his predecessor , former Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).

Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) briefly took over as Speaker pro tempore following McCarthy’s historic ouster in 2023. The California Republican irked his GOP colleagues after making concessions to Democrats during a long government spending battle, amid other criticisms.

Johnson was later voted in to replace McCarthy and the former Speaker resigned from office in December 2023.

Former GOP Reps. John Boehner (Ohio) and Newt Gingrich (Ga.), who also held the gavel, and Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.) — who strongly supported McCarthy — are among the expected guests for the ceremony.

The event is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. EDT.
