Prosecutors drop death penalty for Nick Reiner for alleged murders of parents

( NewsNation ) — Prosecutors are no longer seeking the death penalty against Nick Reiner, who is accused in the double murders of his parents, director Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner .

Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced his decision Tuesday, saying the maximum sentence Reiner can now receive is life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted.

Hochman said he had discussed taking the death penalty off the table with Reiner’s siblings before making the decision.

The son had previously been charged with first-degree murder , but prosecutors secured a special circumstance enhancement that alleges he was lying in wait to murder them. The special circumstance can increase potential penalties in the sentencing phase of a trial to life in prison without parole.

He was indicted by a grand jury last month. The indictment will expedite the case to a jury, bypassing a preliminary hearing.

Reiner had previously pleaded not guilty to the killings of his parents.

Rob Reiner was honored during the Emmy Awards on Monday night.

Actress Jamie Lee Curtis gave a tribute to Rob Reiner, who won a posthumous award for outstanding guest actor in a comedy series for his appearance in FX’s “The Bear.”

“He was generous and kind and funny as hell and a friend to all,” Curtis said.

The couple was found stabbed to death in their Southern California home after their daughter discovered them in late 2025. Reiner was later arrested and jailed without bail in connection with the murders.

Documents from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health stated the couple died within “minutes” of receiving “multiple sharp force injuries” with a “knife, by another.”

Reiner, who lived with his parents, had previously spoken openly about his struggles with drug addiction and periods of homelessness and co-wrote a movie inspired by his struggles with his father.
