Salazar: Trump ‘very receptive’ to warning about Hispanic voters

Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-Fla.) said Sunday that President Trump was “very receptive” to her warning to him about Hispanic voters over his administration’s immigration actions.

“He was a gentleman, very courteous, very receptive,” Salazar told CBS News’s Margaret Brennan on “Face the Nation” of her conversation with the president.

“And I told him exactly what you just repeated: ‘Sir, you have this — this moment in history where you can keep the pot of gold that you brought to the GOP in 2024. No other president.’ And you know I covered, for 35 years, Spanish television. No other president was able to convince the Hispanics to vote 55 points for a GOP president. Please preserve that fortune that you have brought to the party,” she added

Salazar alleged in a campaign advertisement released last week that the president had gone “too far” with federal immigration enforcement operations .

“The same Hispanics who helped you get to the White House in 2024 feel betrayed today,” Salazar, who is currently running for reelection, said in the ad.

“You can be for immigration what Lincoln was for slavery and Reagan was for communism,” she added. “I’m not talking about giving them amnesty. I’m talking about giving them a dignified life in this promised land.”

The Trump administration has faced heat for its strict immigration agenda throughout Trump’s second term, and Republicans are facing a deficit of trust on the issue of immigration, according to recent polling ahead of this November’s key midterms.

Federal immigration authorities have also been involved in multiple deadly incidents during the current Trump administration, with the killings of two U.S. citizens in Minnesota earlier this year sparking mass outrage.

On Monday, the Department of Homeland Security said its investigations unit is leading the probe into a shooting in Austin, Texas, over the weekend that involved a federal immigration officer.
