Medtronic plc (NYSE: MDT ) entered fiscal 2027 expecting solid growth. One quarter later, strong demand for its cardiovascular devices has given management enough confidence to raise that outlook.
The company increased its organic revenue growth forecast and lifted the lower end of its adjusted earnings range after beating quarterly expectations. Its cardiovascular business was the standout, helped by rapid growth in pulsed field ablation products used to treat irregular heart rhythms. Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) is also investing in heart-valve technology and surgical robotics to strengthen its longer-term growth portfolio.
Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) now expects fiscal 2027 organic revenue growth of between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from its previous forecast of 6.75% to 7.25%. The midpoint consequently increased from 7% to 7.5%, representing a meaningful improvement in management's expectations. The company also raised the lower end of its adjusted earnings forecast to $5.94 per share from $5.90 while maintaining the upper end at $6. Although the profit revision is smaller, it narrows the range toward the higher end of the original outlook.
Quarterly performance helps explain the increased confidence. Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) reported adjusted earnings of $1.45 per share on revenue of $9.76 billion. Analysts surveyed by LSEG had expected earnings of $1.39 per share and sales of $9.55 billion. One of the strongest drivers of momentum came from cardiovascular devices, with sales in the cardiovascular segment increasing 19.5% to $3.93 billion. The company's pulsed field ablation portfolio, which treats irregular heart rhythms, grew 88% and was a major contributor to the segment's performance.
CEO Geoff Martha said Medtronic's (NYSE:MDT) confidence reflects not only the quarter's strength but also the breadth of performance across its businesses and the growing contribution from newer platforms, which suggests the company's outlook is not based entirely on one established product category.
Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) is also deploying capital into additional growth markets. It agreed to invest $80 million in heart-valve repair device company Pi-Cardia and received an option to acquire it for $210 million. In a separate development, Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics and obtained rights to distribute the Sentire robotic surgical system in certain markets outside the United States. Martha told Reuters that soft-tissue robotic surgery penetration in emerging markets remains below 1%, describing Sentire as complementary to Medtronic's (NYSE:MDT) Hugo system, giving the company another way to pursue an underpenetrated market.
