Some of these experiments pay off, like the new foe you eventually find yourself against and the overarching story about the ancient civilization you’ll explore the ruins of, but many more of them fall flat. That includes a significantly less compelling journey for its main character, battles that get repetitive way too fast, and light-manipulation puzzles that provide a dim flicker of amusement more often than a roaring flame. There’s still quite a bit to enjoy about Sophia’s origin story, especially if you’re just happy to be spending more time in this depressing but oddly hopeful setting – but it never came close to knocking my socks off the same way either of Amicia and Hugo’s adventures have.
