Xbox & PlayStation Are Headed in Opposite Directions (Again) - Next-Gen Console Watch - IGN

Welcome back to Next-Gen Console Watch! This week Daemon, Max, and Ryan discuss the diverging paths Xbox and PlayStation appear to be taking in this console generation, and it isn't the first time. Ever since the Xbox-PlayStation 2 days, the two competitors have found themselves trading wins every other console generation, with Sony seeing massive success with the PS2, then Microsoft with the Xbox 360 the following generation, and so on. Both have lost massive amounts of gamer good will in this gen, with Sony and Microsoft shuttering studios, cancelling projects, and pushing forward some very not-so-consumer-friendly business decisions. But now it looks like the tide is turning, with Xbox's new leadership, lead by Asha Sharma, trying to earn back fans' trust, and Sony stumbling again by dropping Hideo Kojima's mysterious Physint and the massively unpopular decision to stop producing physical media for first-party titles. Is this a new era for Microsoft? And is it time for Sony to start fresh with a new PlayStation 6 generation?Presented by AMD.Offer available through participating retailers only. 18+ only.Following purchase, product must be installed on system where coupon code will beredeemed. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation: Second-Take Preview

Two hours in Final Fantasy VII Revelation goes fast. At least, that’s what I thought until I reflected on everything I’d done: I zoomed around the skies above its open-world map aboard the Highwind airship, revisited some of the earliest areas from Final Fantasy VII Rebirth to see how they’d changed, and saw a decent chunk of Yuffie’s political quest in her hometown of Wutai. This game is enormous, and seemingly even more focused on freedom than its predecessors. The big question is if that freedom will allow me to better handle much of the bloat that really dragged down my experience with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

Virtual Desktop dev says he’ll ‘try to bring the app’ to Steam Frame.

The Steam Frame and Meta Quest headsets can natively beam your Windows monitors into a headset — but some still prefer Virtual Desktop, the app that pioneered the idea in 2016 before getting “sherlocked” by Meta. Developer Guy Godin says Valve didn’t send him a Frame, but he’ll try to port it anyhow. Technically, I can already stream Virtual Desktop Classic, with working 3D video, but my monitors are stitched together and the controls feel awkward. [Image: Here’s Virtual Desktop Classic streamed from my PC to Steam Frame. A standalone version with passthrough would be better. https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/09/virtual-desktop-steam-frame.jpg?quality=90&strip=all]

Far Cry TV Show Adds Oscar Nominee Jennifer Jason Leigh, Spider-Noir's Brendan Gleeson to Cast

FX's upcoming anthology TV series Far Cry, based on Ubisoft's hit first-person shooter video game franchise, is adding five more actors to its cast as it heads towards production. Oscar nominees Jennifer Jason Lee (Hateful Eight, Fargo) and Brendan Gleeson (Spider-Noir, The Banshees of Inisherin) have signed on, as have Hamish Linklater (Batman: Caped Crusader, The Whisper Man), Sam Spruell (Game of Thrones: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms), and Jamie Demetriou (Only Murders in the Building).

Valve has open-sourced Lepton, its tool to bring Android games to Steam.

“Lepton is intended to help game developers bring their VR Android games to the Steam Frame,” Valve writes. “Lepton is not designed for general Android use, instead opting to keep the bare minimum functionality required to launch into games.” Developers have already used it to port Meta Quest games to the Steam Frame. But could it do more? [Link: frame-public / lepton | https://gitlab.steamos.cloud/frame-public/lepton | GitLab]
