Half an hour later, it has become a clear and uncontestable fact that this game will occupy every waking minute of my existence when it finally arrives this November. If you need to know just one thing about GTA 6, it's that you'll spend so much time in it you'll probably be subject to Leonida taxes. When IGN was invited into the secretive halls of Rockstar North for an exclusive look, we knew the gameplay slice would show how much GTA has grown and evolved since its last iteration launched 13 years ago. But we’re not talking about big perms and leg warmers, we’re talking about body building.Before the dizzying realism of Red Dead Redemption 2, GTA San Andreas was undoubtedly Rockstar’s most ambitious game: a deep world simulation with an array of RPG stats and character customisation options that had an impact on the gameplay and were noticed by the game’s reactive NPCs. The system was well ahead of its time, though many players bounced off it. Often on the grounds that watching your diet and going to the gym in real life isn’t fun, so it shouldn’t be a mandatory minigame in an escapist fantasy.Well, Rockstar have decided to bring it all back for GTA 6: you can take Jason and Lucia to the gym, alone or together, to work on their lats and six-packs. And, yes, you can overeat to make them fat, which might not be great for outrunning the cops but it is very funny. Who’d have thought that one of GTA 6’s most exciting innovations would be all about lifting things and putting them back down again.

Think again: GTA 6’s expanded wanted system is a tense game of cat and mouse.During our hands-off GTA 6 demo with Rockstar, studio co-head Rob Nelson took some time to detail the new wanted system. There’s still your basic six star levels of police aggression, but GTA 6’s sophisticated new chase and surveillance mechanics make a much more granular system than before, with police now taking into account CCTV footage as well as witness phone calls to close in on you. But you also have more ways to evade them. Individual items of clothing are now taken into account, alongside the vehicle you’re driving, the severity of the crime, and even the company you keep.
