Over the past few weeks, debate over whether best-of-five-set tennis should remain has been almost relentless.

Alex de Minaur, as one of the sport's hardest workers and most athletic players, would seem like a guarantee to fall on the side of the defence.

However, speaking after his latest win, a battling comeback win over Andrey Rublev, when asked to weigh in on the debate, his answer was not so black and white.

Instead, the Aussie offered a nuanced take, considering it from both sides, before delivering his final personal verdict.

Alex de Minaur weighs in on debate surrounding Grand Slams scrapping best of five set tennis

Alex de Minaur began by contextualising this debate, noting: "Look, when you ask me something like that, there's two ways to look at it."

He then admitted: "If I look at it as the player, I don't want to get rid of best-of-five because I believe that that is the history and tradition of our sport, what makes Grand Slams truly unique. We used to have a lot more best-of-five matches. Davis Cup used to be best-of-five. Finals of the Masters used to be best-of-five.

"I understand when you're trying to sell a product, that kind of side of things, that debate.

"If me answering as the player that I am, I would not want to get rid of best-of-five."

Carlos Alcaraz defended best-of-five-set tennis earlier this week, whilst Daniil Medvedev said he would be okay for it to be scrapped , highlighting the variance in opinions amongst the ATP Tour.

Alex de Minaur has a message for his fanbase in China

Since returning to the China Open this year, and admittedly throughout his career, De Minaur has commanded great support from the Chinese fans.

They appreciate great tennis players, and he certainly is one of them.

Speaking in that same press conference where he discussed this best-of-five debate, he was also asked if he had a message for those loyal supporters of his here in Beijing.

He replied: "Yeah, I mean, it is pretty cool to feel the love that I have felt here in China ever since I was very young. Going back to Zhuhai, I've had some great memories over here. I've always felt a lot of love from the Chinese fans. It makes it special coming back here.

"Yeah, I've played some good tennis here over the years. I always feel comfortable."
