Germany's Alexander Zverev survived a brief scare on Friday to advance to the third round of the Shanghai Masters, beating Wu Yibing 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
Zverev was leading 6-4, 5-5 and had a break point on Wu's serve when he stumbled out wide after striking a backhand.
He seemed to have tweaked his left ankle, but after a brief break, he was able to move with relative freedom in the closing stages of the match.
Zverev can reach year-end number one spot in the men's world rakings in Shanghai if he reaches the semi-finals. He's currently world number two behind Jannik Sinner, who ended his season early due to knee issues.
The German has won the French Open and the US Open this year and is bidding for his first Masters title since 2024.
