Transfer deadline day is upon us — and if it follows the recent trend, we can expect chaos.

Clubs across Europe are frantically attempting to wrap up their summer business, with a host of high-profile deals in the works.

Manchester City are looking to wrap up their move for Liverpool's Cody Gakpo , while Tottenham Hotspur are aiming to bring in Iliman Ndiaye from Everton, with Richarlison heading in the other direction.

Elsewhere across the continent, will Atletico Madrid finally negotiate with Barcelona over Julian Alvarez after their summer-long saga?

Many questions are set to be answered on Tuesday, and The Athletic will bring you all the latest through our dedicated live coverage.

When does the window close for Premier League clubs?

The transfer window officially comes to a close in England — including the Premier League, the Championship, League One and League Two — at 11pm BST on September 1.

It marks a return to the traditional late deadline, after the summer 2025 and winter 2026 deadlines were set at 7pm local time. That change was introduced to help give club staff working across transfer departments a more normal working pattern.

However, there were signs of the difficulties clubs faced in concluding their business by 7pm. Last year's summer transfer deadline day saw Liverpool's move for Marc Guehi and Leeds United's pursuit of Harry Wilson break down late in the day.

Although club staff will be required to put in some unsociable hours on Tuesday, they may welcome the extra four-hour buffer as they try to conclude their business.

However, the action may not end at 11pm — deal sheets allow clubs to conclude signings two hours after the transfer window closes, provided the correct paperwork is submitted before the deadline.

Clubs could be working in the early hours of the UK morning to get deals over the line.

All five major European leagues are set to close their transfer windows on September 1.

When English clubs adjusted their transfer window to 7pm BST, the German, French and Italian leagues followed suit (8pm local time). Spain retained its 10:59pm BST (11:59pm local time) deadline.

And despite England reverting to the 11pm cut-off, clubs in Germany, France and Italy have all retained the earlier time of 8pm (local time, 7pm BST). Spanish clubs are unchanged.

Scottish team have a further two days to conduct their business — their window closes on September 3 at 5pm.

Major League Soccer clubs are well into the 2026 campaign, and their summer transfer deadline is similarly aligned.

The "secondary transfer window" for MLS clubs got underway on July 13, later than the European windows, and it closes on September 2.

The league said it is the first time in over two decades (excluding the Covid-19-affected 2020 campaign) that a transfer window has extended into September, and that by aligning with European clubs, it has given its teams "a greater opportunity to acquire high-quality international talent".

The transfer deadline also applies to the three Canadian clubs in MLS: Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver Whitecaps.

There have been several high-profile transfers to the MLS this summer, including Robert Lewandowski joining Chicago Fire and former Manchester United midfielder Casemiro's move to Inter Miami.

Unlike in the Premier League and English Football League, Women's Super League clubs will be required to conclude transfer business before their 2026-27 season gets underway.

The WSL's transfer deadline is set at 11pm BST on Thursday, September 3.

That is just the day before the campaign gets underway, with London City Lionesses hosting Manchester United in the season opener on Friday at 7pm BST.

Like the MLS, the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) is also well into its 2026 season, and its clubs have until September 7 to wrap up any impending business.

After this evening's deadline, there will still be some significant leagues at play in the transfer market.

Turkish clubs have provided some of the biggest talking points in the window — Mohamed Salah's move to Trabzonspor and Galatasaray's interest in Bruno Fernandes , for example.

They will be free to complete transfers until Friday, September 4. And with players in major European leagues still able to depart their clubs beyond the deadline, there is potential for big deals to still be done in the coming days.

In Saudi Arabia, the transfer window is open until October 12, according to FIFA . While it has been a less significant role for Saudi Pro League clubs this summer, several high-profile moves have still provided major talking points, with Al Hilal successful in their pursuit of Ollie Watkins , and Gabriel Martinelli also set to join.

Elsewhere, the Portuguese window is open until September 15, while in the Netherlands, business must conclude by the September 2 deadline.
