Jota's return from long-term injury will come too late for the winger to play in upcoming Europa League games after the Portuguese was left out of Celtic's squad along with three of their summer signings.

Joel van den Berg, the 19-year-old bought from PSV Eindhoven, and two on-loan Chelsea midfielders - forward Shim Mheuka and midfielder Landon Emenalo - also miss out after their arrivals this week.

The 27-year-old Jota suffered a cruciate ligament injury in April 2025 but returned to training last month, with assistant manager Shaun Maloney stressing "he's still a matter of weeks" away from a return.

Forward Callum Osmand does make the 25-man squad despite his recent injury.

Manager Martin O'Neill said: "There are obviously some very tough decisions to be made in putting this squad together for the Europa League.

"It's a difficult list and, for me, the most important thing is our domestic football."

Celtic can change their squad should they progress from the league stage.

"Of course, we're disappointed about the Champions League, but the Europa League is still very strong and we want to try and do as well as we possibly can in that," O'Neill added.

"But the players we have signed, we want them to make a mark initially in the domestic scene, which is the most important thing for us at this stage.

"Then we've got a chance to perhaps change things in February if we're still in contention."
