No. 3 Miami football avoided a near upset against arch-rival Florida State on Saturday evening before holding on for a 43-35 double overtime win.
FSU faced a 4th-and-21 from the Miami 36-yard line in double overtime, needing a first down to keep the game alive. Quarterback Ashton Daniels heaved a pass to the end zone, and wide receiver Micahi Danzy was there for the touchdown. However, FSU left tackle Xavier Chaplin was called for holding, and FSU got pushed back 10 yards.
Once again, Daniels threw a pass to the end zone. This time, wide receiver Duce Robinson and defensive back Bryce Fitzgerald fought for the ball in the air. Ultimately, officials deemed that Fitzgerald came away with the interception, and a review upheld the ruling.
Miami wide receiver Malachi Toney also showcased why he's one of the best college football players in the country and a Heisman Trophy candidate en route to leading the No. 3 Hurricanes to a 43-35 double overtime victory at home against arch-rival Florida State.
In addition to his tremendous pass-catching, Toney rushed for 31 yards on two carries and found wide receiver Cooper Barkate with a pass for a two-point conversion to give Miami a 43-35 lead in double OT.
Toney scored his first touchdown in the second quarter after quarterback Darius Mensah found him for 14 yards to put Miami up 13-7.
The sophomore scored his second touchdown in double overtime on a three-yarder and then unleashed the two-point conversion pass.
Toney has now caught 50 passes for 758 yards and eight touchdowns in six games.
FSU gave Miami all it could handle and took a 21-14 lead in the third quarter after Daniels found Quintrevion Wisner for a 28-yard score.
However, Miami responded with a pair of three-yard touchdowns courtesy of a Javian Mallory run and an Elija Lofton reception.
FSU immediately tied the game, though, after Daniels hit Robinson for 75 yards.
The two teams traded touchdowns in overtime. FSU started with Robinson's 20-yard touchdown catch, but Miami got a score when Mallory ran it in from 25 yards.
In the end, the 'Canes held on for the win thanks in part to Toney, who's on track to be heading to New York as a Heisman finalist in December.
