Barcelona opens door to cash in on Arsenal target

Jules Kounde has been a long-standing target for Arsenal as the Gunners look to build a squad containing world-class players in every position.

The Frenchman plays for Barcelona and has been one of Europe's finest defenders in recent seasons. His quality and versatility are the main reasons Arsenal wants to bring him to the Emirates.

The Gunners already have two excellent right backs, while Ezri Konsa and Cristhian Mosquera can also operate in that position. However, Kounde has been an important player for one of Barcelona's strongest teams in recent history.

Arsenal believes he could make an immediate impact in north London. His experience at the highest level would also strengthen the squad as the Gunners compete for major honours.

Barcelona has previously been unwilling to allow Kounde to leave, but its position has now changed. Sport reports that the Catalan club is open to selling the defender if a suitable offer arrives.

The club would prefer to retain him, but it is no longer treating him as untouchable. A substantial proposal could therefore persuade Barcelona to sanction his departure.

That development is encouraging for Arsenal, which has maintained its interest in the Frenchman. The Gunners could now explore a deal if they believe Kounde is available at an acceptable price.

Kounde's arrival could signal that Arsenal intends to sell either Ben White or Jurrien Timber. The Frenchman can operate at right back and centre back, giving Mikel Arteta another high-quality defensive option.

He could also become an immediate starter at the Emirates. His experience with Barcelona and France means he would not need much time to adjust to the demands of playing for a leading club.

Arsenal must still meet Barcelona's financial expectations, as the Catalans will not allow Kounde to leave for a modest fee. Other clubs may also compete for his signature if his availability becomes clear.

The Gunners will therefore need to act decisively. If they complete the transfer, Kounde could strengthen their defence and provide the quality and versatility they want in every position.
