Cristiano Ronaldo Suspended by Portugal After Training Camp Exit Amid Jorge Jesus Rift
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has provisionally suspended Cristiano Ronaldo after the legendary forward walked out on the national team.
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has provisionally suspended Cristiano Ronaldo after the legendary forward walked out on the national team.
"Without prejudice to the automatic provisional suspension to which he was subject until the date of the initiation of proceedings, a non-automatic preventive suspension of the player was ordered and an urgent status was assigned to the proceedings," the federation said, per The Athletic's Jessica Hopkins and Mario Cortegana .
This comes after Ronaldo directly challenged Portugal coach Jorge Jesus over leaving him on the bench in a 2-1 win over Norway in a Sept. 27 UEFA Nations League match.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner left the team prior to its next fixture, a 4-2 win over Denmark.
Ronaldo published a lengthy statement on Instagram recounting a conversation he had with Jesus and Al-Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho. Jesus purportedly pledged to address the situation in the press conference prior to the Denmark match.
Ronaldo laid out eight points he claimed Jesus was prepared to make.
The one that grabbed the most attention was the coach's supposed assertion that "I made a mistake in having someone of the stature of Pelé or Mardona warm up and then not putting him in the game."
Jesus would then add that "I don't want [Ronaldo] a little, I want him a lot."
Needless to say, that's not how the press conference unfolded, much to Ronaldo's chagrin.
Many will argue this break between Portugal and Ronaldo is long overdue.
It has become increasingly hard for the 41-year-old to hide his decline on the pitch, and he has been unwilling to accept a role that reflects his diminished value.
Ronaldo started all five games at the 2026 World Cup. He scored three goals and had zero assists. Two of his goals came against an overmatched Uzbekistan, and the third was a penalty against Croatia.
Simply put, it's time for Portugal to move on to a post-Cristiano future.
A legend of Ronaldo's status is deserving of a proper farewell, much like longtime rival Lionel Messi just had with Argentina. The fallout from the ongoing drama might preclude that from happening.
