Steve Sarkisian and Texas were handed their first loss of the season in upset fashion on Saturday as Oklahoma knocked off the top-ranked Longhorns 27-24 in the Red River Rivalry.

For Sarkisian, the loss came down to making avoidable mistakes.

"You give people chances to hang around in games, and they took advantage of it and ultimately won the game," Sarkisian told reporters after the loss. "For us, there's obviously a level of disappointment. There's a level of anger and frustration because we know we have issues that need to be fixed... But they reared their ugly head today against a quality team."

The Longhorns were penalized eight times for 61 yards and a blocked punt gave the Sooners their first touchdown of the game, continuing a trend of a lack of discipline for Texas.

"I am frustrated. Because we are working at it," Sarkisian said . "It's not for a lack of effort... but it clearly has not been good enough."

Arch Manning threw a pair of interceptions, including one that set up the Sooners' game-winning field goal. The quarterback threw for 260 yards and three touchdowns, but his mistakes were costly.

"Arch competed his tail off and he made some tremendous plays," Sarkisian said.

Execution was certainly an issue, but much of Texas' problems came down to coaching as well. The Longhorns went 3-of-14 on third down, and a decision to kick a field goal on 4th-and-2 late in the fourth quarter came back to haunt the Longhorns when it missed from 53 yards.

But will Sarkisian give up his play-calling duties?

While it's a dissapointing result for a Texas team that has national championship hopes, the Longhorns can rest assured that the loss doesn't have to define their season.

"There's a level of frustration, a level of disappointment, but also a level of optimism knowing we can get those things fixed," Sarkisian told reporters . "We've got a long season to go."
