Revealed at Saint-Étienne at a young age and praised for his maturity and defensive qualities, Wesley Fofana quickly became one of the most promising center backs of his generation.
After a short season with the professionals in the Forez region, Fofana joined England and signed with Leicester. His impressive spell with the Foxes in the Premier League confirmed his immense potential, convincing Chelsea to spend slightly more than 80 million euros in the summer of 2022 to make him the pillar of its defensive line in the years to come.
However, the French defender's London trajectory has not been the one expected so far. After accumulating physical setbacks and a serious cruciate ligament rupture, Fofana has missed 124 matches in the Blues shirt since his arrival and has failed to live up to the enormous expectations placed on him.
Each return to the field offered glimpses of his anticipation and aggression, but too many physical uncertainties kept his consistency at the highest level compromised for a long time.
Wesley Fofana's Chelsea Turnaround Revealed After 124 Matches Missed
Now 25, the Marseille native finally seems to have exorcised his demons and found the consistency he lacked. After a 38-match season last year, he appears physically liberated and injury-free at the start of this season.
From there, Fofana strings together starts and rediscovers the explosiveness, aerial dominance, and duel-winning sharpness that made him one of the English league's most feared defenders.
Within Xabi Alonso's tactical setup at Chelsea, whether in a back three or a back four, the Frenchman has become a true cornerstone in the eyes of the Spanish coach. Alongside Maxence Lacroix, Levi Colwill or Josh Acheampong, Fofana has become undroppable.
Before the latter's arrival, Fofana had in fact praised the confidence Alonso could give to the Stamford Bridge squad: "I think everyone knows we need stability. We talked about it last season with the directors, and they said the same thing. Of course, we need results […], but we need stability, and I think he [Xabi Alonso] is the right person for that."
His ability to play out cleanly under pressure and his authority inevitably appeal to Alonso, who returns that trust. Solid, serene, and back at the top of his game, Fofana is finally proving his talent and establishing himself as one of the strong men in the London project this season. A reality he had always known, regardless of his past coaches at Chelsea, who always named him an undroppable starter.
