3 things to know about the SEC, which could overwhelm the 12-team playoff field this season

How many SEC teams will make the College Football Playoff ?

As teams from the Big Ten have won each of the first two 12-team playoffs, the SEC has gotten eight teams in the field in that span. That's the most of any league.

But how much are playoff bids worth when someone else is winning the title?

It's a question that looms large over a league that appears to once again have a lot of teams capable of making the playoff but few that could actually win it.

Here's what you need to know about the SEC ahead of the 2026 college football season.

Who are the legitimate national title contenders?

With just a week to go until the season begins in earnest, Texas is the only SEC team among the top five betting favorites for the national title. And given how popular Texas is among public bettors, that popularity is likely priced into the Longhorns ' +650 odds alongside Notre Dame and behind Ohio State at +600.

Throw in the fact that no one among the AP poll's 69 voters put an SEC team No. 1 on his or her ballot and the SEC is in a unique spot this season. There appear to be a lot of really, really good teams in the conference. But how many of them are capable of winning the national title?

You'll notice in the table above that Texas isn't even the favorite to win the conference. That honor goes to Georgia, with odds just slightly better than the Longhorns. The Bulldogs are 3-0 against the Longhorns over the past two seasons and the two teams do not meet in the regular season in 2026 for the first time since Texas' arrival in the conference.

Georgia could have its best team since the one that went 13-1 in 2023. The Bulldogs are largely homegrown and are looking to get the run game really humming again after a relatively lackluster last two seasons. QB Gunner Stockton is a borderline Heisman favorite, though replacing Zachariah Branch 's production at wide receiver will be imperative for his chances at the award.

Knowing this could be Arch Manning 's final season in Austin, Texas made a bunch of impact moves in the transfer portal. The Longhorns added star Auburn WR Cam Coleman (Auburn) along with RBs Raleek Brown ( Arizona State ) and Hollywood Smothers (NC State). Texas also appeared to dodge a big injury bullet last week when left tackle Trevor Goosby's knee injury was diagnosed as a bone bruise and his recovery timeline put him on track to potentially be available against Ohio State in Week 2.

The SEC looks to be the hardest conference to figure out at the top. Even though no team got a first-place vote, the league has seven in the top 13 of the AP poll. And all seven of those teams have odds to win the league of 12-1 or better.

Good luck trying to pick the exact finishing order of the top half of the conference.

There's a strong case to be made for any of those seven teams' conference championship and playoff hopes too. LSU? The last time QB Sam Leavitt was healthy, he was helping lead Arizona State to the CFP. The offensive line in front of him should be solid thanks to the addition of Jordan Seaton , and the receiving options will be plentiful if Florida transfer Eugene Wilson III can stay healthy. Yes, there's that huge trip to Ole Miss for Lane Kiffin's squad, but the Tigers get Texas A&M, Alabama and Texas all at home.

The Rebels still have QB Trinidad Chambliss and RB Kewan Lacy on offense and head coach Pete Golding added a lot to the defense via the transfer portal. Getting Texas and Oklahoma on the road is tough, but at least the Georgia game is at home.

Texas A&M is fresh off its first playoff appearance and brings back QB Marcel Reed and WR Mario Craver . The Aggies held opposing QBs to just 177 passing yards a game in 2025 and should have a very strong pass defense again this season even while having to replace Cashius Howell and his 11.5 sacks.

After a long summer camp battle, Alabama named Keelon Russell the starter after Ty Simpson 's departure to the NFL. A bounce-back season from Ryan Coleman-Williams will go a long way to putting the Crimson Tide closer to the category of national title contenders, especially if head coach Kalen DeBoer and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb can figure out what the heck was going on with the team's running game in 2025.

Oklahoma also has dreams of back-to-back playoff appearances, especially with a win at Michigan in Week 2. The Sooners have one of the toughest schedules among SEC contenders. OU has to travel to Georgia, Florida and Missouri, plays Texas in Dallas and gets Ole Miss, Texas A&M at home. A 9-3 record might not be enough to make the SEC title game, but it could be enough for a spot in the CFP.

Who is in for a surprise season in 2026?

Now that we've established that the SEC's crowd of contenders is tightly packed, it's also likely that someone outside of that group will finish near the top of the standings.

Just look at the last three seasons of the preseason media poll. In the conference's last year with divisions in 2023, Missouri was picked to finish fifth in the East. The Tigers went 6-2 in SEC play and finished 11-2 overall after winning the Cotton Bowl. In 2024, South Carolina was picked to finish 13th in the league after the additions of Oklahoma and Texas. The Gamecocks went 5-3 in SEC play in a massive tie for fourth.

Last summer, Vanderbilt occupied that No. 13 spot in the preseason poll. The Commodores became one of the best stories of the season and finished a game out of a tie for first place in the league as Diego Pavia was second in the Heisman voting to Fernando Mendoza .

If there's something about starting the season at No. 13, then Vanderbilt is in for another big year. The Commodores were picked in that spot again at SEC media days in July. Pavia is gone, but transfer QB Blaze Berlowitz takes over after beating out five-star freshman Jared Curtis for the starting job. We will know a lot about Vandy over the first five weeks of the season. From Weeks 3-5, Vanderbilt plays NC State and visits Auburn and Georgia.

Auburn was picked 12th in the conference and could be primed for a first-year bounce under new coach Alex Golesh. The former USF coach brought along ex-Bulls QB Byrum Brown after Brown threw for over 3,000 and rushed for over 1,000 yards in 2025. Did you know Auburn hasn't had a winning season since 2020?

The Gamecocks could also surprise, though injuries to OT Jacarrius Peak and edge rusher Dylan Stewart are a concern. The two have been out for fall camp and coach Shane Beamer said both won't be ready for the start of the season. Stewart has 11 sacks over his first two seasons in Columbia. Peak, a transfer from NC State, is being counted on to bolster an offensive line that struggled mightily at times in 2025. Better line play will go a long way for LaNorris Sellers to live up to the NFL Draft hype that preceded his disappointing 2025 season.
