Newcastle's miserable evening deepened in stoppage time as substitute Jacob Ramsey was sent off after picking up two bookings in just 86 seconds.

The disappointing Magpies were beaten by Everton for a second time in the space of four days after their 3-1 Carabao Cup fourth-round defeat on Merseyside.

Another sorry display from Matthias Jaissle's side was underlined by Barry's 49th-minute winner, which Sky Sports commentator Andy Hinchcliffe labelled as "truly shocking" defending and "terrible goalkeeping".

Newcastle reacted slowly to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's quick free-kick, which released Tyrique George, whose shot somehow squirmed under Lukas Hornicek, allowing Barry to tap home into an empty net.

Toon boss Jaissle, however, believed the goal should have "clearly" been disallowed for a stray elbow from Barry on Fabian Schar in the build-up.

Everton, who were once again without Jack Grealish, should have been ahead earlier in the game as Barry and Harrison Armstrong wasted great first-half chances, with Sky Sports' Jamie Carragher calling Newcastle "poor".

Anthony Elanga came closest to equalising for Newcastle as he hit the post in the 66th minute.

It took the home side until the 85th minute to register their first shot on target through substitute Yoane Wissa, who five minutes later forced a good save from ex-Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Ramsey's 98th-minute red card helped Everton to hold on as they inflicted back-to-back home defeats on Newcastle, who have now lost four of their last five games in all competitions.

But for Everton, their first away league success since victory at St James' Park in February, moves David Moyes' side up to seventh, while Newcastle fall to 13th.

Carra: Boring Newcastle in for a tough season

Sky Sports' Jamie Carragher speaking on Monday Night Football :

"Watching them of late, especially at home, it feels flat and a little bit boring, and that was one thing I didn't think I'd ever be describing Jaissle's Newcastle as.

"You think of the system he's come from, the Red Bull model, how they like to play. At times, those types of teams and managers can leave themselves open at the back, but it's front-footed, it's aggressive, it's getting the crowd involved, and we've just never seen any of that at all tonight [Monday] really. And that's the one where I'm a little bit sort of flummoxed watching it.

"I think it's going to be a tough season for Newcastle. They've got a lot of young players, they've got a young manager in there. The crowd are expecting a lot more."

Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle speaking to Sky Sports on the boos:

"After a performance like that, I can understand that. That's a reality, and I am responsible for that.

"We need to work again and again on the things we need to improve. After today, that's a lot."

On the loss: "We had a different approach. It looked so good during the week; I have to say the lads were committed to what we were doing, and today we can just look back and wonder why we couldn't bring it on the pitch. If you can't deliver when it counts, you don't deserve to win.

"We were not brave enough in possession. Too many long balls.

"It feels at the moment that there's not too much confidence. Not only with the young lads, but also with the more experienced ones. We have to overcome that as a unit. It is expected when you are in transition. Only together can we come out of it."

Everton boss David Moyes speaking to Sky Sports :

"I'm incredibly proud of the team all the time because their effort and their commitment are unquestionable.

"The way they go about their work is terrific. There's not a lot of them, but they are doing a great job at the moment.

"We're creating chances. That's the big thing for me. We want to be a side that creates more chances. If we could be more offensive, that's the way I'd like it to be. Thierno's had some big opportunities, and we need him to finish. He was on the spot today.

"I don't think anybody enjoys playing the same team twice so quickly. For us, winning in the League Cup and then coming to win in the league is hugely important. The points are important. We want to get back and nearer the top end of the league. It's incredibly tight."

24: HUGE MISS! Thierno Barry misses a "golden chance" according to Sky co-commentator Andy Hinchcliffe. He takes a wild swipe and completely misses the ball.

45+3: HUGE CHANCE! An unmarked Harrison Armstrong steers his first-time effort wide from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's pullback.

HALF-TIME! No shots on target for either side, with Newcastle booed off at the break.

49: EVERTON GOAL! A quick free-kick sees Tyrique George released and his shot squirms under Lukas Hornicek to allow Barry to rebound home.

66: NEWCASTLE CHANCE! Anthony Elanga tries to squeeze the ball home at the back stick but his ball hits the post and spins across the line as Everton clear.

90: PICKFORD SAVES! Yoane Wissa's first-time finish is well saved by Jordan Pickford with his outstretched leg.

90+8: RED CARD! Newcastle substitute Jacob Ramsey is sent off for a second yellow in the space of just 86 seconds.

Jack Grealish was not named in Everton's squad for the game at Newcastle, with the club citing a fitness issue.

The 31-year-old was left out of the team for Thursday's Carabao Cup fourth-round win over the Magpies due to a breach of club discipline after missing training.

Grealish was again left out at St James' Park, with a starting line-up post on the Everton club website stating that he was "not match fit".

After the win at Newcastle, Moyes said he "did not know yet" whether Grealish would be available for Friday's home Premier League game against Coventry, live on Sky Sports .

Asked whether there was a way back for Grealish, Moyes replied: "Of course there is."
