After fumble-return TD was negated because Virginia Tech defender dropped ball before goal line, Hokies return another fumble for TD on next play

It's only Week 2, but Virginia Tech produced one of the wildest defensive sequences you'll see over the entirety of the 2026 college football season on Saturday.

Late in the first half — with the Hokies already up 10-0 — Aycen Stevens sacked Old Dominion quarterback Quinn Henicle and forced a fumble. Keon Wylie picked up the ball and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown … but dropped the ball before he crossed the goal line.

It didn't even look like Wylie was celebrating too early, either. He simply just had the ball fall out of his hands as he shifted the ball from his left to his right.

The touchback gave Old Dominion the ball at its own 20-yard line and, well, Henicle was sacked again. And he fumbled again. This time, Mylachi Williams forced the fumble, and Tyson Flowers picked it up. And Flowers held onto the ball as he crossed the goal line for a 17-0 Virginia Tech lead.

If you believe the ball doesn't lie, then the second touchdown might have been a ball-don't-lie moment for you. And it was a clear sign that Old Dominion probably wasn't going to beat the Hokies for a second straight season. ODU took down Virginia Tech 45-26 a season ago, as the Hokies struggled through a disappointing season that ultimately led to the hire of former Penn State coach James Franklin.
