Fiery Fermín López leads the hunt as Barcelona overwhelm Aston Villa
The Barcelona midfielder is showing what it means to bring the fight in the Champions League
Barcelona need Fermín López more than they probably realize.
When things don't go their way in the biggest games, it's often because there is a drop in intensity that their opponents take advantage of.
Fermín has become the warrior of the Camp Nou. For a stadium that has struggled to be the fortress that Barcelona needs it to be (I can tell you all about the 250 euro ticket prices to see Barca play Getafe that I did not pay), it helps to have a player who gets the fans, socios and tourists alike, out of their seats.
It's not just the moves of Lamine Yamal or the goals of Raphinha that get the stands rocking. It can also be the simple act of a player going the extra mile. Energy is contagious.
At his best, Fermín is the guy with a chip on his shoulder. He's in the starting lineup, and he knows he has to perform to keep himself there.
He also understands the assignment that Hansi Flick has given the team. The front four must press intensely as a unit. Against Aston Villa , the fruits of this system, when the players are fully committed, were on display.
For all the goals that Barcelona has scored, you get the sense that the chemistry between the forwards still isn't fully clicking in the attack. Defensively, however, Flick has in place the exact characters that he needs.
Anthony Gordon, Raphinha, and Fermín López are Flick's type of guys. He can sleep well the night before a game knowing they will execute to the best of their ability on the gameplan.
With the makeshift defense still in place, it's even more important for the forwards to press effectively. Flick will have his players rewatch the tape against Aston Villa and say, here you go, this is how my system is supposed to look.
It helps that Lamine was clinical with the chance that was created early on from the press. It can be hard after all to sustain such high intensity for a full 90 minutes.
The backline still does look vulnerable. This game was the first clean sheet in Europe in the last 18 games. That stat tells the story of Barca's Champions League disapointments.
Aston Villa had their chances, but didn't have on their finishing boots.
Next up is a trip to Atletico Madrid who will be coming off a 2-0 loss to Bayern Munich at home. If the Bavarians can do it, so should Barcelona.
The defenders will be tested again, and most likely, we'll see the same guys, give or take Gerard Martín or Frenkie de Jong.
Before the cavalry returns, the attacking players must step up again with the same defensive intensity and quality in front of goal.
A win against Atleti would win back the goodwill of Barcelona's fanbase, at least for the time being.
It won't come easy though. Hansi Flick is due to get payback against Diego Simeone, but he'll have to get his lineup and tactics right.
One player who looks ready and not afraid of the fight is Fermín López.
Barcelona must prove that they've learned the harsh lesson that Atleti inflicted on them last season.
This is an important chance at redemption, and a chance to show they've truly turned a page.
