Oklahoma's David Stone suffers knee injury in Monday's practice as 'it kind of popped out'

Oklahoma could be without star defensive lineman David Stone on Saturday against No. 2 Georgia. Stone suffered a knee injury during practice on Monday.

After a report said that Stone was injured while playing offense during practice, coach Brent Venables on Tuesday made clear that Stone was not on that side of the ball when the injury occurred and one of his knees "kind of popped out."

"David Stone, I know it was reported that he was hurt last night at practice, he wasn't on offense, I guess that was out there — he was on offense," Venables said at his news conference. "But he wasn't on offense when he got banged up. He ran his knee into a scout team player during a jog through and it kind of popped out. We'll see where he's at. The X-rays were positive, I guess. I'm reporting the news. That's all I'm doing, reporting the news. But he said his pain was about a two out of 10 right now and so we'll kind of go from there."

Venables wouldn't comment on Stone's status for Saturday's game or any potential long-term absence and said Stone's game status would be reflected on Oklahoma's Wednesday injury report.

"If David is unavailable this week, we're going to need some guys to step up and play big," Venables said.

Stone is a potential first-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft who was slated to take on a bigger role up front for the Sooners in 2026. He has 12 tackles, two tackles for loss and a half sack through Oklahoma's first three games of the season. In 2025, Stone had 42 total tackles, 8 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.

The Sooners are 2-1 after losing to Michigan in Week 2 and enter Saturday's game as a 14-point underdog after scoring just 14 points in an eight-point win over New Mexico in Week 3.
