Manchester City can always count on Erling Haaland . The Norwegian striker once again delivered when City needed him, scoring twice in the second half to secure a 2-0 win over FC Porto and make the perfect start to their Champions League campaign.
The brace took Haaland to 36 Champions League goals for City in just 40 appearances, drawing him level with Sergio Agüero as the club's joint-leading scorer in the competition.
Haaland's numbers are even more impressive when his entire Champions League career is considered. After spells with Red Bull Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund , the 26-year-old now has 59 goals in 59 appearances in the competition.
He also moved ahead of Thomas Müller into seventh place on the Champions League's all-time scoring chart and has now scored against 22 different opponents in the competition.
City had to wait for their breakthrough at the Dragão, with Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa frustrating Haaland several times before the Norwegian finally found the net after the break. His second came deep into stoppage time, as he calmly converted from close range to seal the points.
Haaland also reached another major milestone at the Dragão, moving into third place on Manchester City 's all-time scoring chart with 167 goals. He surpassed Tommy Johnson , who scored 166 times for the club between 1920 and 1930.
Only Eric Brook , with 177 goals, and Sergio Agüero, with 260, have scored more for City than Haaland.
