One killed, eight others wounded in shooting outside Legion Field following Alabama A&M's win over Alabama State
It's the second straight weekend a mass shooting has taken place following a college football game.
One person was killed and eight others were shot outside of Birmingham's Legion Field after the annual game between Alabama A&M and Alabama State on Saturday night.
Police said they found multiple gunshot victims after arriving to the scene. The shooting happened just before 8 p.m. local time after Alabama A&M beat Alabama State 31-28. A person has been detained and multiple firearms were recovered from the scene.
"Everyone knows this is the largest event we have here in the city and it's extremely taxing on our personnel," Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett said in a statement via WBRC. "Other leaders in law enforcement recognize that and they quickly offered up support and we are grateful for that quick response. I'll end with this .. our Birmingham police officers are true heroes. They are true heroes. Seeing the courage and resilience they displayed tonight, running alongside them in the directing of those gunshots, triaging people as we pass by them going in the direction of the shots to make sure they weren't injured, or if they were injured, rendering aid as we continue toward the gunfire. That shows true courage, that shows the true dedication they have to actually saving lives. And I'm thankful that all of our police officers as well others who were of assistance are able to go home to their families tonight.
The incident marks the second straight weekend that a mass shooting has taken place outside a college football game. On Oct. 24, 11 people were shot after a fight broke out after Florida A&M's homecoming game in Tallahassee.
Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell told people at the Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church on Thursday that police estimated there were thousands of people on Perry Street outside of Bragg Memorial Stadium following the game.
As of Thursday, six of the 11 wounded in the shooting were still hospitalized
"That fight broke up. There was another fight just shortly after that. And then right after that. But in two minutes, a gun was brought into that scene, handed from one youth to another, and then a number of shots were fired," he said. "We estimate anywhere from 3,000 to 6,000 people were probably on Perry Street. So I thank the Lord Jesus Christ that we had no deaths," he added.
