Liverpool still have a fair few things to sort out this season.

The Anfield outfit are still nowhere near ready to start challenging for the Premier League title despite their almost £200 million spend in the summer.

Many players have their futures hanging in the balance with some even already looking for potential ways to exit L4 in January.

However, it's not only the potential exit of players that Liverpool need to worry about.

Liverpool won't make a decision on Virgil van Dijk 's future until April 2027

Virgil van Dijk is still one of Liverpool's most important players .

The Dutchman has been the Reds' leader for as long as anyone can remember with the club likely to be much worse off if he wasn't among their ranks.

For years now, he's been the rock of the Anfield outfit's defence with fans hardly able to even vision a Liverpool team without him in it.

However, since his contract is set to expire in June 2027, Liverpool don't really have that long left to figure things out, or, that's what fans believe, anyway.

But, a fresh report from Football Insider has contradicted those thoughts with journalist Pete O'Rourke sharing that Liverpool don't really want to make a final decision on Van Dijk 's future until April 2027.

"The 35-year-old will see his current contract expire in 2027 as things stand, and could be allowed to leave Anfield on a free transfer come the end of the season," they wrote .

"He remains a crucial part of Andoni Iraola 's starting XI for now, but concerns about his age and the club's long-term plans mean no decision has been made yet.

"As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Liverpool will follow a similar path to the last time Van Dijk signed a contract extension.

"In 2025, both Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah put pen to paper on extensions shortly before the end of the season after months of speculation about potential moves away.

"Two years on, Liverpool are once again preparing to hold talks later in the season, with a decision over the captain's future not expected to be made until April at the earliest."

Liverpool must figure out if they want to keep hold of Virgil van Dijk by January

The Anfield outfit may want as much time as possible to judge whether they believe he's worth another two-year extension but, with the form he's been in so far, it's clear that his levels haven't dropped.

Even though he's 35 years old, he is very clearly still the Reds' best centre-back and without him, it's unclear whether Liverpool would even be unbeaten at the moment.

Iraola clearly sees him as a major part of his plans this season so, you'd think that if the Spaniard is sticking around for a while that he'd want his favoured players to stay put.

Obviously, we're only a few games into the 2026-27 campaign so things could change but, Liverpool without Van Dijk is a very scary thought at the moment.

Especially since they already need to upgrade many other areas of their squad.
