Erling Haaland Rest Decision Puts Man City Rotation Under Spotlight
Manchester City have a straightforward issue to manage before Ipswich arrive at the Etihad. Erling Haaland keeps scoring, keeps starting and keeps piling up minutes. Eventually, that catches up with you.
Enzo Maresca has now said the quiet part out loud. "At some point we probably need to give him rest, some days off," the Italian said in his pre-match press conference on Friday. That does not confirm Haaland will sit out the Ipswich game, but it plainly puts the idea on the table.
Haaland workload becoming hard to ignore
The schedule has been relentless. Haaland has featured for City across three competitions and missed only the Carabao Cup third round win over Norwich. He also started all four of Norway's Nations League matches during the autumn international break.
There was already a fitness concern after he limped off against Portugal on October 4. Since then, he has done what elite centre-forwards do, he recovered, played, and scored. He found the net against Liverpool and then struck twice in the Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. That leaves him on 13 goals for club and country this season.
He has also scored in seven consecutive matches for City. Form is not the problem. Fatigue might be.
Maresca made clear this is not solely about Haaland. "We are thinking about this not just with Erling because we have players, unfortunately or fortunately, they are playing all the games with us and all the games with the international teams.
"Elliot [Anderson], Enzo [Fernandez], Marc [Guehi], Erling, Ruben [Dias] – so at some point we probably need to give them some rest."
That is sensible squad management, nothing more, nothing less. The question is timing.
Ipswich test may come too soon for full rest
On balance, leaving Haaland out against Ipswich would still feel unlikely. City can go six points clear at the top, temporarily at least, with a win. Managers do not usually bench their most decisive player in that situation unless they have to.
The more logical window for rotation may be the upcoming European fixture against AEK Athens. City also lack a like-for-like replacement. Antoine Semenyo can lead the line and Phil Foden can operate as a false nine, as seen in previous seasons, but neither gives opponents the same problem.
For now, the message is simple. Haaland needs protecting, City need points, and Maresca has a call to make.
