The New England Patriots extended their winning streak to three games on Sunday with a 26-19 win over the New York Jets, but that doesn't mean head coach Mike Vrabel was happy with the way his team played.
Vrabel admitted after the game that the Patriots were "lucky to win," and he was harsher toward his team on Monday morning, calling the team's turnover issues "ridiculous" and going as far as to call the team's performance "an embarrassment."
The Patriots took a 17-3 lead into halftime and seemed to be in control of the game, but some key turnovers forced them to hang on late after New York pulled within seven points in the fourth quarter. New England lost a pair of fumbles, giving the team 13 giveaways on the season, which is the second-most in the NFL.
Receiver A.J. Brown also had a rough return after missing four games with an ankle injury. Brown finished with three catches and three drops on 10 targets, and he muffed an onside kick late in the fourth quarter before tight end Eli Raridon recovered the loose ball to seal the win.
"I didn't play good. I don't know, like, my timing was off," Brown said, via Pro Football Talk . "I'm much better than what I put on display today. There's no excuses. I'll be better."
If there's one positive for New England, it's that quarterback Drake Maye hasn't turned the ball over in the last two weeks, after he had nine turnovers in the first four games of the season. So while there were a lot of turnovers in the game, at least they weren't coming from Maye.
Vrabel opened his postgame press conference by saying that the Patriots were "lucky to win" after the way they played.
"We just didn't play very well," Vrabel said, via Pro Football Talk . "We tried to beat ourselves, but we made enough plays in critical situations to help us get through here today."
Vrabel doubled down during an appearance on WEEI's The Greg Hill Show on Monday morning as he called the team's turnovers "an embarrassment."
"We turn the ball over at a historic rate, and it's ridiculous. It's an embarrassment," Vrabel said, via ESPN's Mike Reiss .
The Patriots won't have much time to clean things up, either, as they face the Chicago Bears on Thursday night on a short week. Needless to say, Vrabel will be expecting a much cleaner performance.
