Rutgers football coach Greg Schiano landing on the hot seat could potentially create an opening for the return for former LSU coach Brian Kelly, The Athletic's Bruce Feldman reported Friday.

Feldman named Rutgers as a potential landing spot for Kelly, who is looking to make a return to college coaching for the first time since being dismissed by LSU last October.

According to Feldman, Kelly is "very, very motivated to get back on the sidelines."

Feldman pointed out Kelly has connections to the Rutgers front office through president Williams Tate and athletic director Keli Zinn, both of whom worked with Kelly at LSU before heading to New Jersey.

He predicted working at Rutgers "would be a much different dynamic" to LSU and added that "Kelly is very comfortable in the Northeast."

Schiano has drawn scrutiny after leading the Scarlet Knights to an 0-2 start in his seventh season since returning to the program in 2020.

He has three years and $22.5 million remaining on his contract, which would cost about $17.3 million to buy out, per CBS Sports' Robby Kalland .

Kelly spent four years with Cincinnati and 12 with Notre Dame before arriving in Baton Rouge in 2022.

He was dismissed after a 5-3 start to his fourth season with LSU at the cost of a $54 million buyout . CBS Sports announced in July he would serve as an analyst for college football games on the network this season.

Schiano has said he isn't concerned about his employment amid his team's slow start to the season. Whether Rutgers is able to stay competitive Saturday against No. 12 USC could still potentially impact his job security going forward.
